DOVER PLAINS — The Dover town board announced Wednesday they will schedule a public meeting with the developers of the former Harlem Valley Psychiatric Center.

The time and date will be announced shortly.

Dover resident Sam Shufelt, president of the Dover school board and chairman of the development’s community advisory committee, commended the board for agreeing to keeping the conversation going.

"I know it’s in the town’s best interest," he said. "I also know that we have to keep moving on it."

About 30 residents attended the business meeting of the board, concerned that the development process had stalled.

The Benjamin Companies, which purchased the 850-acre site in 2003, held an information meeting for over 200 residents Monday, against the wishes of the town board.

Representatives of the development said that the town has essentially rejected a design for 1,400 housing units they drew up together with the board over a series of five workshops.

Supervisor Jill Way said Wednesday that isn’t true. The board wants the developer to submit a plan that follows the outline of the environmental impact statement. She said other plans can be studied as well.

Michael Zarin, attorney for the developer, said the company will certainly work toward another meeting.

"It’s our hope and expectation that we and the town can get on the same page," he said. "We will cooperate in every way to accomplish this project, like we have for the last four years."
